Also known as the "Athens of the North", Edinburgh can be rightfully called one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. Its distinctive and unique skyline follows closely that of Venice. The beauty of this historic City lies in the fact that it preserved over the years its own atmosphere, a medieval one you might say. The buildings, the castle, the statues breathe with history. It's as if every corner of the city has its own story which awaits to be uncovered.
Its beauty also lies in the variety that is specific to Edinburgh: cathedrals, old kirks and buildings, a castle situated right in the middle of the city, beautiful gardens at the bottom of the Castle Rock, haunting kirkyards. One can go shopping in luxurious stores such as Jenners and Harvey Nichols or relax in the Docks area (Leith) and last but by no means least the Edinburgh Festival is the event of the year which lasts throughout the month of August. The Edinburgh Festival attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year who enjoy the Festival shows as well as the famous Edinburgh Tattoo

EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOOThe Castle Esplanade is the venue of the
world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Since 1950 the Edinburgh Military
Tattoo has been an impressive annual event, held during the period of the
International Festival on the Castle Esplanade (three weeks in August).
The Army presents a lively programme of music, marching and historical
re-enactments under floodlights before large and appreciative audiences.
Add to this the spectacular setting of the Castle Esplanade, the ramparts,
the delicate play of light, together with the excited murmur and applause
of 9,000 spectators, and you have the recipe for an experience never to be
forgotten. |

The Palace of Holyrood House is the official residence of the Queen when she is in Scotland and is situated at the bottom of the historic Royal Mile. It dates from 1498 when it was built by James IV, and it has been closely linked with royalty ever since. The Palace is located on the site of Holyrood Abbey, an Augustine monastery dating from 1128. When the Queen is not there parts of the palace are sometimes open to visitors with guided tours available. You can see several rooms in the State Apartments. The palace is surrounded by the Holyrood Park. |
